Okay seriously, what exactly is microdosing?

Updated: Oct 14, 2020

“I micro dose shrooms every day,” she tells me as her eyes widen with glee. “It’s completely changed my life. My anxiety is gone, and I feel way more creative and just more upbeat.”

Literally, this conversation is happening everywhere lately. The psychedelic that a few of us tried “once or twice” in our high school years is back in full force. And it looks way different. Let me start by first actually explaining what the “micro” in microdosing means: If you or someone you knew in high school had done shrooms, they probably did around a gram (1,000 mg) to get that hallucinogenic feeling that either attracted some of you to shrooms, or scared you away. I fall in the latter group so I didn’t even try microdosing until more recently.

A microdose is a much smaller quantity. Anywhere from 100 mg to 400 mg depending on your own tolerance. I personally do about 300 mg every few days.

And the name…shrooms… the official name is psilocybin. But you can use either one. I prefer psilocybin because it helps to lend some credibility to a naturally occurring substance that is already helping countless people. Anecdotally, some if the benefits of microdosing psilocybin include:

  • Increased perception

  • Increased creativity

  • Decreased anxiety

  • Decreased depression

  • Expansion of the mind

Oh, and another thing about microdosing… it’s not just popular with psilocybin, there have been numerous anecdotes (and a few studies) about the benefits of microdosing other drugs like LSD and MDMA. The latter has even been shown to help with the effects of PTSD.

So now to the information you all came here for – how to start with microdosing psilocybin. There’s some people who just take tiny bites of the raw mushroom product which I guess is one way to do it, but I prefer capsules because they help me to track my actual dosing.

I take one capsule every two days. Not every day so that my body doesn’t get used to them and can perform a “reset”. I usually take them in the morning and just feel more “up” and more creative. As a fairly heavy duty anxiety sufferer, microdosing psilocybin has been a godsend. And in terms of the hallucinogenic feelings that some of you might associate with shrooms/ psilocybin, there is none of that with microdosing.

As with any herbal supplement, start low and go slow. Start with 100 mg and see how you feel. Increase if you feel like you aren’t really getting any affects from microdosing. But remember, you aren't supposed to feel a lot, just a mild bump in your mood and creativity.
